But that wasn’t all they were doing.
The GBC couple are part of the crew on board the OM ship Logos Hope which travels the world spreading the Gospel.
Stopping in ports around the globe, the ship has a massive floating bookshop to which crowds are drawn. And while some of the crew are meeting those who visit the ship, others are helping local churches ashore.
The Harpers, who have worked for OM for decades, returned to the ship last autumn. Speaking from the Jamaican Hills, where he is training future crew members, Des said: "Montego Bay and Kingston are two very busy ports for us. Pray that we’ll have really effective ministry - especially with so many new people."
OM has been among the international aid organisations responding to the devastating earthquake in nearby Haiti. Des said: "Haiti is such a complicated and difficult situation that I know of no plans at present for the ship to visit."
"OM Caribbean has had recent significant contact with a few orphanages they have connections with - but, of course, any assistance seems like a drop in the ocean in view of the national need."
"It does seem the international relief movement is picking up but help will be required for a long time."
"How OM and the ship team gets involved with this remains to be seen. We’re praying the Lord will use this disaster to bring a new day for Haiti - impoverished both materially and spiritually."
Lynne broke her arm in early November and has had difficulty obtaining good treatment in several of the ports which the ship has stopped in. Des said the injury is healing with physiotherapy, but consideration is still being given as to any further treatment.
He added: "I’d appreciate prayer for wisdom and strength to handle additional training responsibilities over the next few months - and of course that we see the Lord transform lives, both Christians and non-Christians, in the days ahead."
