A Q&A with the Creche leader, Elaine Duddy:

Q. Very simply, what is the crèche?
A. It is a place where young children are looked after during the service so that parents can go to church.

Q. Why is it important?
A. It means the parents can go in and relax and take part in the service without worrying if their child cries beside them or is unsettled or
whatever. I know what that’s like because I’ve been there and you don’t relax.

Q. What ages of children do you cater for?
A. There’s a baby crèche and a toddler crèche – the toddler crèche would have children up to about three or four. The babies are looked after and the toddlers are able to play.

Q. How many children are there on a Sunday?
A. There would be anything up to 15 toddlers and anything between four and eight babies – it varies from Sunday to Sunday.

Q. How long have you been helping out at the crèche?
A. I’ve been helping out since I joined the church but have been leader since September.

Q. How many people are involved in supervising the children?
A. There are two looking after the babies and three with the toddlers – the leaders operate on a rota and you’re only on every Sunday in so many.

Q. How can people be confi dent their children will be well looked after?
A. Most of the helpers are parents themselves and have a lot of experience but at the moment we’re implementing a child protection policy and I’ve been going around the helpers with copies of that to read and getting
background checks done.

Q. Are you looking for more helpers?
A. Oh yes, defi nitely! We do have a lot of helpers but are always looking for more. 

Q. What skills do people need to have if they want to help out?
A. Well, they obviously need to like children but there are no real skills – just playing with them or with the babies you may need to feed them or change a nappy or something.
